I am officially a college graduate! There is no sleep for the wicked, however. The two weeks since graduation have been packed with work and shoots. Also had a second screening of Skateboarding In The City That Never Sleeps at Epstein's Bar in LES. I am currently working on a longer form edit that I hope to release on Go Skateboarding Day (the current edit is 20 minutes, I would like to cut a new version around 25 minutes).
Finally, I have a new cinematography reel. It's taken a really long time, almost a year. Not a very good turnaround, but these things happen. So this reel includes footage from my Junior Year at SVA, the summer of 2011, and about a month into Thesis year. DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY THESIS PROJECTS...

Managed to get this video up. This was just a happenstance type thing. No stabilization, just holding my 7d. It was more of a test to see how 30p looked when shooting at Brooklyn Bowl...what do you think?
Next week will be an ALL MAN MAN post, with an unreleased edit of Honus performing "Steak Knives", a video from their Williamsburg Hall of Music show last May, and photos from that show! For now I'll repost their performance of "Haute Tropique".

My thesis film has a screening time! Sunday, May 6th, at 8:45pm at the School of Visual Arts theater at 333 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. Here is the Facebook event for more details...http://www.facebook.com/events/345424052178203/ Here is the complete schedule...http://dusty.sva.edu/may_6Beatrice.html
Aside from my film, Neon Cellulite, is playing on Monday at 7pm. I was the 2nd unit on that film and it is really great!
Click for the trailer!
Aside from all that, I have been soaking in the fact that I am done with school, and will have a diploma in a little over a week. Time flies, and the experiences and people I met while at SVA will stick with me forever.
I added another photo gallery, this time it's Aussie reggae rockers The Black Seeds, video coming soon!

AND IT IS FINISHED. My thesis film was turned in this past Friday, and I couldn't be happier and more relieved. 6 days of editing, and Skateboarding In The City That Never Sleeps is a 20 minute, completed piece. A trailer will be up within the next two weeks, before the Dustys Film Festival, which is open to public in NYC between May 6th-9th. After that, I hope to have it played at local bars/theaters. Beyond that, hopefully it will reach festivals and possibly (possibly) be featured on skateboarding sites. For now, I'll repost the throwaway clip I uploaded months ago.
Two videos have gone up for Relix, two that I am particularly fond of. Both shot and edited by me, myself, and I.

Leroy Justice Live at Brooklyn Bowl
The Leroy Justice video above has a cool story behind it. Before Boardwalk Empire, HBO's period series about prohibition era Atlantic City, and one of my favorite tv series, premiered, Leroy Justice was approached to write and record the title song. In 16 hours, they came up with and recorded a great song. Unfortunately HBO went another direction, but this video really incapsulates the feeling I get when I hear this song. And the editor of this video and all the other Leroy Justice live at Brooklyn Bowl videos is none other than the frontman and singer of Leroy Justice, Jason Gallagher!

Graduation looms closer and closer...as non school work continues to pile on. Recently, I shot Turkuaz at the Brooklyn Bowl. Videos are coming soon and I've updated my photo section, click on the photo below to see the gallery from that night's show, and continue to check on that section as I add photos from shows such as Wu Tang at Best Buy Theater and Furthur at Gathering of the Vibes, to name a few!

Spring has sprung?! I do not understand this weather in the least, but I will take it with open arms. Been hitting the streets hard for the final push for my thesis documentary, Skateboarding In The City That Never Sleeps, which will be entering the editing stage within the next two weeks. Got my hands on a GoPro 2, pretty happy with the results and the camera itself. Also happened upon 2 100' rolls of good ol' Kodak film stock, which I will be shooting early next week. Received a hearty contribution earlier in the week of old and new unseen footage from 5Boro skateboards for exclusive use in SITCTNS.
Shoots for Relix are also coming in at a solid pace, and with even more talented artists. Here are some that have gone online in the past few weeks, including an awesome cover of Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" with Biz Markie and Umphrey's McGee!

There will be plenty more to come, today alone I edited three performances while at the Relix HQ. I am jealous of everyone I know at SXSW right now, but then again I did spend my entire day yesterday outside on the Hudson filming an insane bowl session at Chelsea Piers skatepark.

Time flies when you are busier than hell! This past month has been crazy, from live shows to short films, I have been shooting something at least once a week. Bugs In The Dark at Brooklyn Bowl, Leroy Justice at Brooklyn Bowl, Akron/Family and Bad Weather California at 285 Kent, and that is just music. The past two weekends were principal photography for Tiny Universe, AJ Zaro's thesis film. I also managed to squeeze in dislocating my knee two days before we started shooting, so I've been combating that injury while maintaining my busy schedule. Back to Tiny Universe, We shot on the Canon 5d, with the redrock cinema package, and Zeiss prime lens. Yesterday I handed off all the footage to our editor, so other than one pick up day of shooting, the film is out of my hands. I am going to post some screengrabs of some of my favorite shots, which I may have to take down. But for now, here they are.
(Taken from an iPhone)
Very general, but I don't want to give away too much of the story. Relix videos have also been popping up like crazy, so here are those.

1.9.2012!!
First post of the new year. Crazy last month with the holidays, coupled with the end of the semester and the busiest time of the year at the Brooklyn Bowl. Film work has slowed due to the massive amount of work I now have. But it presents a unique opportunity for me because I can be very specific about what projects I sign on to. The new year also brings a new chapter to Relix videos, as I am working with the other video guy and the editors of the magazine to retool the way we do things. Here are a couple videos that have been going online the last month.

I finally got around to making a page for my thesis film at The School of Visual Arts. It's entitled Skateboarding In The City That Never Sleeps, and it focuses on the skateboarding community here in New York City and how it positively affects the non skate community. Check it out and show some support, repost it on your blog/facebook/twitter! Here is a montage of some footage that won't be in the final product.
So that's that. Same thing, different day. I've got some narrative thesis films that I am helping on coming up in the next two months, so there will be a lot of prep for these shoots. I've also started producing my first segment for the new Relix videos, the artist will remain a secret...for now....

So here it is, the fruit of my labor for a 9 hour dream shoot about a month ago. The editing added a gritty texture to the shots, which we chose to underexpose so in post they would be able to bring the gain up and make the digital a little less harsh. The lighting was directly influenced by 90's music videos and live concerts. I will have to make a post later this week with more stuff, it is beginning to pile up a bit.

I am now the proud owner of a Zeiss 50mm lens, an Opteka shoulder rig, Opteka X-grip, and Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens. Perfect addition to my equipment, especially with the approaching projects, which include a music video, two short films, and my documentary. Shot two concerts this past weekend using the new gear, Steve Kimock and Friends at the Brooklyn Bowl and Bugs in the Dark at Mercury Lounge. Here's a look at the gear and some samples of what I've shot with it thus far. (below are screen shots of actual video footage, 24p pro res 422)

Too busy for a website...just kidding. But seriously, I need to figure out a system to keep this updated. School has started, which means thesis shoots, AKA 12+ hour days on locations around the tri state area. Work for my thesis documentary has also kicked in full gear. Plus I now work at the Brooklyn Bowl. So needless to say, I've got a full plate. But keeping this update moving...I've got quite a few Relix videos that have been piling up these last few months, not sure if they are in order, but at this point I can't expect it to be perfect.

Another month of Summer has gone by. More shoots for Relix than I can even remember,Gathering of the Vibes this upcoming weekend, Newport Folk Fest the weekend after, and in between I will working more and more on my senior thesis. I will have to make a page for it on here soon. I've uploaded quite a few videos, Relix videos and a couple of freelance gigs. I just shot a live show of 28 North, that should be up sometime this week. Here are some screengrabs of what I've posted. Check out all the Videos sections for all the new videos.

A month off from school has come and gone, my time spent between the Relix office and the city and Long Island and of course, the motherstate of New Jersey. Saw Phish play Camden this past friday, celebrated my 21st on Saturday, and today my sister graduates high school. Recently had Man Man visit the Relix boiler room for a eccentric performance. I've uploaded 11(!!!) new videos for Relix...including but not limited to...
7 Walkers ft. Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Maps & Atlases
American Babies
Leroy Justice
All those videos and more can be found in my Relix videos section. I've also gone ahead and posted the full length Italian Package. Along with my busy schedule at Relix, I had the opportunity to photograph Mobb Deep's return show at Best Buy Theater in NYC, opening the show was Ghostface Killah with Raekwon alongside members of Wu Tang Clan.
More of those pictures should be surfacing soon. I also had the incredible opportunity to participate in Mountain Jam 2011, a music festival at Hunter Mountain in Upstate NY. I was there to work the Relix booth, which you can find at almost any major festival this summer, and also cover the festival for Jambands.com, Relix's sister site. Heres the article: http://www.jambands.com/news/2011/06/06/gov-t-mule-umphrey-s-mcgee-and-my-morning-jacket-among-mountain-jam-highlights/
The video of Man Man should be up within the week, as well as Leroy Justice performing at the Relix booth at Mountain Jam. Until then...

Summer is here! At least for me, summer means lots of time on my skateboard, lots of live music, and a ton of shoots! Right now I am working on an edit of a Maps & Atlases performance in the Relix boiler room and a live show of Tim Herron Corporation. I've started the process of my thesis film, just basics but it's something. Got to see HR of Bad Brains perform at the Brooklyn Bowl last weekend, it was one hell of a way to celebrate the news about Osama! The news broke right before they went on, and they even played through a fire alarm conundrum.

Recently shot Jared Gorbel, Bert Jansch, American Babies, Nico's Gun, and Hayes Carll at Relix. Those videos will be up soon. Megafaun and Moonalice performances are now live at Relix.com.

Today I turned in Italian Package, and I must say I am happy/relieved to have it done. Now it's time for me to start submitting it to festivals and to cut a nice trailer for the web. I just added 7 new videos to the site, all music related. Performers include Middle Brother, Grace Potter, Bobby Long, The London Souls, and Kj Denhart. Check them out in the Videos for Relix Magazine section. Here's some grabs from those videos and of some recent happenings.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals along with Middle Brother are now live at Relix.com. The Grace Potter video has been getting a ton of hits so a few more certainly won't hurt! Worked with two other bands this week, Danger Muffin and Megafaun. Steve Kimock will be up shortly. Had an amazing weekend shooting my buddies film for the year. Two 7ds, more than enough studio and practical lights, and a full high school theater to work in. Not to mention the camera and lighting crew consisted of only cinematography majors...needless to say, this film will look great, plus the story is really wonderful. Post production is almost wrapped for Italian Package. Can't wait to put that up for everyone to see. I'll stop blabbering now, check out some pictures of my last few weeks below and click the links to check out the new Relix videos.

Short update today as I have class in about 20 minutes. One song from Ivan & Alyosha's performance in the Relix office is up, really happy with how this turned out. Spending my Spring Break shooting and editing like crazy for Relix. Had two performances at the end of last week and finished cutting a song out of each performance today. Another two performances are scheduled for tomorrow. Two videos have been recently uploaded, The Heavy Pets, which I only edited, and Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi All-Stars. Over a month of no updates again, but I promise that even if I don't post a new blog, I'm constantly adding new videos, sometimes I only have the time post a video and post it without a blog update. I'm also prepping for my shoot this weekend, continuing where I left off with Italian Package. So expect pictures from that next week sometime. Shot Kj Denhart and Luther from North Mississippi All Stars in the Relix office in the past few weeks, just finished cutting a performance of the Heavy Pets that will be online soon. Three new videos are online at Relix.com, check them out below or in my Videos section.

Classes have started for the second semester and that means even more student shoots are on the horizon, plus G Love will be performing at Relix later in the month. I'm sure there will be more performances in the mean time but that is a big one that's on the calender. Hopefully the new year will bring more posts and I will be more diligent about keeping the blog up to date.

I don't know how I managed to go almost a month without updating. I have an alarm on my computer to remind me to update, but somehow I managed to ignore it. A lot has happened in that time, both with Relix and my short film. On Saturday I had my first day of shooting for my short titled "Italian Package". It went smoothly with the help of my awesome crew and great set of actors. Used two Zeiss lens, a 25mm 2.8 and a 50mm 1.4, and output the camera image to Marshall monitor for focus and for myself and the assistant director to watch. Had an amazing sound guy on set along with a great lighting crew and none of it would have been possible without the help from my wonderful girlfriend who picked up some last minute props and even helped get food!
Two videos that I worked on for Relix are now online. One is with 28 North, who I met at a studio in Brooklyn and the other is Alberta Cross, from the Rocks Off cruise last month.
Earlier today, Bill Kreutzmann of the original Grateful Dead came into the office with his band 7 Walkers which includes frequent Willie Nelson collaborator Matt Hubbard and New Orleans funk legend Malcolm "Papa" Mali. To say the least, it was an incredible time. They covered "Sugaree" by the Dead and it was jaw dropping. Now that I am done with classes for the semester, it's time to sit back and enjoy the break, happy holidays!

7am call for Saturdays shoot. Started as gaffer/key grip and ended up doing everything camera, since the director of photography was new to the 5d, including setting up the rig, mounting lens, setting the camera, and occasionally operating and pulling focus. Another early morning call Sunday led way to an amazing shoot with The Mclovins at the Brooklyn Bowl. Got to take a Canon 14mm 2.8 from set to use at the show, and wow! See for yourself with these pictures from the weekend.
11.15
Busy week with Relix! Tuesday night went on the Rocks Off Cruise around Manhattan to film Alberta Cross and The London Souls. Got to see a sick show and also cruise around on the Hudson River. Wednesday bright and early Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights showed up at the Relix office for a in-office performance. Then Friday I went into the studio with 28 North to do a in studio performance, check them out in the On the Verge feature in Relix Magazine! So excited to be working with them again, it's been two years since we collaborated on something, unfortunately the director of that project fudged it and they never got a music video. Hopefully we will be working more together in the future. This weekend I am gaffer/key grip for an SVA film and then on Sunday I am filming The Mclovins at the Brooklyn Bowl. Here are some photos from my busy week.

After finding out that Youtube has a new strict policy on using music, even though using music for a reel is under fair use, I have re-uploaded to Vimeo. Here are some screengrabs from 2 recent school assignments. Directed by Mike Gerbino and Aj Zaro, respectively. Both shot with my Canon 7d and 50mm 1.8 lens. Used custom Kelvin white balance to achieve unique color for each assignment.

That's a wrap on Made! Shot the 26 page script in two days, a 13 1/2 hour day on Friday and a shorter day for me on Saturday, about 9 hours. There will be a day of pick-up shots and a scene we didn't get to but for the most part, it's in the post productions stages. Got to shoot a lot with my 7d, switching between a 28-70mm and the coveted 70-200mm, both L series 2.8 constant aperture lens. Here are some shots of my camera with the lens that I used and a few BTS shots. Stay tuned for more info on the premiere and the progress as it gets showed to TV execs.

School has started and so has the work. I will be gripping a tv pilot next weekend and will be meeting with the crew tomorrow. Wrote my first paper of the year today and later I have to go out and pick up some books. The project that I worked on for Relix with STS9 is up on their website, and I have also worked on another shoot for them in the last few weeks. Click on the picture to see it on Relix.com.

Kind of slacked on updating, Its been a busy few weeks. Moved into a studio in Brooklyn from my old 3 bedroom, which was practically Long Island it was so far out. Said my good-byes to my roommates and spent the first night in my new studio Saturday night. Last week I was privileged enough to shoot for Relix Magazine, covering a STS9 acoustic jam session. It was a pleasure to work on a crew of creative individuals, I cannot wait to see the final product. Shot with my Canon 7d, a 5d, and 2 Lumix GH1's. I will post the finished product as soon as I get it, but for now here are some screen grabs.

Posted a new random video, Andrew Bird live at Cemetery Gates. Also put up the Basement Jams I talked about in my last post. Here it is, it can also be found in music videos section.

Summertime and the living's busy! Went on a little mini-vacation to Long Island for a few days. One more scene is left in Among the Trees and I am starting to get excited. Hopefully it will be premiering at a large theater so it can be seen on a big screen. Got to see Hot Tub Time Machine and 28 Weeks Later over the weekend, I was so surprised with HTTM, it had me laughing the whole movie. And 28 Weeks Later was a great sequel to the first, it really kept with the aesthetic of the original. Plus Jeremy Renner, from The Hurt Locker, was brilliant in it. I highly recommend this film to anyone who liked 28 Days Later.
I am in the editing stages of an acoustic jam with Anna De La Motte and Nick Kossup, should be up by the end of the day. Here a little teaser for Among the Trees.
7.14
Another busy few weeks. New videos have been uploaded, including a new submission for the Boss Loop Contest performed by Nickolas Kossup and the jam from the other week. They can be found in the contest submission video section and music video section, respectively. Here are some photos from the 7d, either stills from projects or just random photos.

These past few days have been hectic! Well a good hectic, but still busy nonetheless. Had a few days of rest at the beach as a break from production of Among the Trees. Been working with Explorers' guitarist Nickolas Kossup on some short videos, you can find the first one we collaborated on in my Video contest section, as it is for the Boss Loop Contest. Also filmed a jam session between Nick and two other local musicians last night, that is currently being edited together. Received an indislider mini dolly for my birthday, here's a little video I shot in my backyard just to test it out.

Crazy weekend! Explorers had a show at Croc Rock in Allentown for a battle of the bands type deal, of course they won. Also got to film Bad Fish, a Sublime cover band, at the same venue. Just found a 35-80mm zoom lens which fits my 7d, experimenting with that for future use in projects. Videos from the Explorers show can be found in the Commercial video section. Here is also a little skateboarding video I put together from a day out with the homies.
